Choosing a good domain name can be both easy and difficult, so I recommend reading this before making a final decision on one.
Choose Something Simple
A domain name should be both easy to read, as well as easy to type. Using uncommon or custom spelling, or extremely long web addresses, is not recommended. These are more difficult for the user to type in or remember. The only times these websites are successful is with a lot of advertising.
Pick The Correct Extension
When choosing a domain name, I highly recommend choosing something with a .com extension. If you must choose something that is not a .com extension, you should use a .org or .net since these are more trusted. You will find options like .xyz or .site which are much less expensive, but search engines see these extensions as less desirable. Users will also tend to trust information from these sites much less.
Avoid These When Choosing A Domain Name
There are many items to avoid when choosing your domain name. Using numbers, dashes, or special characters, can make your domain name hard to read or remember. Accidental or purposeful misspellings can also make it difficult for users to navigate to your home page. They will just make your domain name appear untrustworthy to both search engines and users. You should also run your domain name through a trademark checker such as this United States Patent and Trademark System to make sure a business does not already own that particular name or combination of words for their slogan.
Don’t Stress It Too Much
If you sit around for the next three weeks trying to think of the next perfect domain name, you are wasting your time. Don’t stress on this too hard. That could have been three weeks you were posting to your blog. I recommend taking a few hours or a day to think it over, then make a decision. Your blog will perform better on content then the name anyway. Once you have a domain name picked out, head back over to my page that will show you how to register the name and create your blog here.
